High School vs College Essay
Upon attending college for a semester and a half, I have found that I enjoy being a college student more than being a high school student. In the time that i have been in college, I have seen that more freedom is allowed to students in college than in high school. Such choices as the note taking, the environment, or class selection are a few examples of how college is less restrictive than high school. Because of the educational freedom and having more control over my education, I find being a college student more enjoyable than being a high school student. In high school, the classes that students take appear to be easy. They seem easy because when a person is in high school, he/she can just brush effects off. For example, if someone does not pay attention and does not do anything for the entire class period, he/she can copy someone elseââ¬â¢s notes and still learn the material because they have that class five days a week. Another reason high school classes give the impression of being easy is because a person can miss school/class, not get penalized, and most of the time the teacher will go over the material the student had missed. ââ¬Å"High school is mandatory and free whereas college is voluntary and expensive. ââ¬Å"(Information for High School Students) On the other hand in college, the classes appear to be hard. A college student cannot just brush a class off. Well, he/she can, but they will suffer from it in the long run. For instance, if someone does happen to attend class but has no intention of paying attention to the lecture, he/she is going to suffer from not being attentive and will wish he/she did pay attention because most of the time professors do not review any of the lectures or material before a test. Like high school, a college student can copy another studentââ¬â¢s notes it may be slightly helpful, but not as much as if they had been in class and attentive. College classes are also hard because a person cannot really miss a class. In order to know what is going on and what assignments are going to be due, a student needs to attend every class if possible because he/she does not have the same class five days a week. In college, it is either two or three days a week and that is it. If someone does miss a class, it is very hard to catch up on what he/she missed. In high school, ââ¬Å"teachers provide you with information you missed when you were absent but in college professors expect you to get from classmates any notes from classes you missed. â⬠(The Differences High school vs College) In my opinion, missing one class in college is like missing a whole week in high school because that is how much material is covered in one class. Another topic to be compared and contrasted is note taking and teachers. in high school, the notes are given directly to the students by the teacher; spelled out and everything. Sometimes the teacher will tell the students what to write down in their notes from the textbooks that are given to them. The teacher will usually tell them what to study and wait until everyone is finished writing to continue. Similarily in college sometimes a student does get one of the professors which do tell them what to write down and do write notes on the board for them, but the notes are not as vague as in high school. On the other hand, when a professor lectures, the students have to listen carefully and write downideas that seem to be importnat to them. In college, abbreviations are a key aspect because people are not going to be able to write down the professorââ¬â¢s lecture word for word, so instead they take the main ideas and write them down. Teachers, both in high school and college, differ in his/her own class policies. For example, both in high school and in college, you can have one teacher that is extremely nice and will tell you what to write and study and you can also have a teacher who is not so nice and does not tell you anything and you have to kind of figure it out for yourself. The last topic in which i am going to compare and contrast is the atmosphere/environment. In highschool, a student does not really have much freedom, high school is kind of like a jail. A student has to be in class by a certain time, and if he/she is late, he/she can get in an enormous amount of trouble. For instance, if a high school walks into class five minutes late, and his/her teacher is not very nice, that student is most likely going to receive a referaal and a detention. A student in high school only has roughly two to three minutes between each class. However, in college the environment is not as strict. There is a good amount of freedom at college. There are breaks between classes anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. During these breaks, a person does not have to stay at school. ââ¬Å"Although there is freedom in college, likewise to high school eventhough a college student will not get a referral or detention the studentââ¬â¢s professor does seem to get mad if a student is late consistentaly and will take a point or two off his/her participation and effort grade, if he/she happen to have one of those not so nice professorââ¬â¢s. ââ¬Å"(Personal Interview) Overall, there are many similarities and differences between high school and college. I found there to be more differences in my search than similarities. I stated three subject matters but there are many more, such as, the tests, the people, the work, and so on. Being a college student now, if there was an opportunity for me to go back and relive my high school days i would, but this time i would pay much more attention because once someone gets to college it seems to be ten times harder!

American Fiction
Society seems to play important roles in the betterment of life of an individual. Following paper will briefly highlight the differences in themes of three novels; namely ââ¬Å"My Antonia,â⬠by Willa Cather, ââ¬Å"The Age of Innocence,â⬠by Edith Wharton, and ââ¬Å"A Farewell to Armsâ⬠by Ernest Hemingway. Introduction ââ¬ËAge of Innocenceââ¬â¢ written by Edith Wharton in 1920 is a story emerging from the 1870s surrounding an upper class couple in new York city awaiting marriage. Newland Archer, a young lawyer, awaits his marriage with May Welland belonging to one of the riches and best families in New York. This marriage depends on the choice of bride made by Newland Archer but this choice seems to be doubtful after his interaction with the brideââ¬â¢s cousin, Ellen Olenska, returning from Europe after separation from her husband Count Olenski. Countess has decided to divorce the Count, a rather unacceptable decision for her family. Persuasions are worked o n the Countess to make her return to the Count but all in vain. Instead, the interaction between Newland and Ellen grows until as decided by the families, unfortunately, Newland gets married to May.As Ellen continuously refuses to return to the Count, the Count and her family withhold all financial help and support to the Countess. This novel is based on a story and characters that are surrounded by their societies guiding these characters to do the right thing as ââ¬Ërequiredââ¬â¢. Although running from typical societal rules, Newland could get married to Ellen but as the families had already arranged for the marriage of May and Newland, there was no way to refuse to the preplanned marriage and leave May, as families in those times were more terrified about being disgraced.Thereby assumptions and morals followed in the American society in 1870s are challenged in this novel with no condemnations of these rules and morals whatsoever. American writer Willa Cather wrote ââ¬ËMy Antoniaââ¬â¢ in 1918. This novel is composed of five books. The story encompasses some immigrant families from Nebraska who move to USA to start a new life. Antonia, the main character of the story, is the eldest daughter of a Bohemian family among the other immigrant families. Jim Burden, narrator of the story is the character who falls in love with Antonia. The five books of this novel highlight the life of Antonia starting from her childhood until getting married and becoming a mother. After a depression based suicide of Antoniaââ¬â¢s father, Antonia survives a hard life on the prairie farms of Black Hawk, Nebraska. For the Harlings family in a town nearby, she works as a house cleaner and a cook gaining a reputation of the most beautiful girl in town that upsets the Harlings. Larry Donovan, Antoniaââ¬â¢s fiance flees the town before marriage abandoning Antonia pregnant with his child.Antonia finds a happy life being married to Cuzak having ten children with him on the f arms. Jim, on the other hand, is younger than Antonia but is involved in her while Antonia still takes him as a child. Jim attends college and starts studying and after a longer period, still having affection for Antonia in his heart, returns to Black Hawk and finds that she is now a mother of ten children and happily married. All Jim decides to live with now is the memory of Antonia and an affection that he has for her family.Thereby the main theme of this novel is change and transformations of life. ââ¬ËA Farewell to Armsââ¬â¢ was written by Ernest Hemingway in 1929. The story emerges from the period of First World War, surrounding a nurse Catherine Barkley who falls in love with an American soldier Frederic Henry. Cynicism of soldiers and displacement of populations that follow wars have been highlighted in the novel. ââ¬ËA Farewell to Armsââ¬â¢ is divided into five books that highlight the life and times of these two people during the war. These five books have highli ghted changes in Henryââ¬â¢s philosophy about life and universe, as Catehrine brings order in his life making him understand the importance of values as morality, dignity, and honor. First book talks about the relationship in its beginning stages. The couple spends some time in Milan in summers, being the topic of second book. Third book highlights Henry returning to the battle unit and killing a sergeant for which he is arrested by the battle police for interrogation, where a possibility of Henry being executed arises which he escapes by jumping into a river.Fourth book talks about the couple reuniting in Switzerland. The fifth book highlights a quiet peaceful life being lived by the couple until Catherine undergoes hemorrhage during labor of their son that causes her death making Henry accept the sad reality of death making Henry understand the meaning of life, changing his cynical philosophy. Contrast between Three Novels A great contrast exists between three novels. ââ¬ËAg e of innocenceââ¬â¢ written by Edith Wharton talks about the societal rules being followed in New York in 1870s that includes an element of disgrace associated with divorce of a daughter in a family.Giving up personal desires for saving the honor and respect of oneââ¬â¢s family is the main theme of this story. A caring aspect of society has been highlighted in this case where values and morals of a society promise to protect a woman within the secure boundaries of her family. Divorce in late 19th century was considered as a disgrace and an invitation to scandals thought of as a threat to women in their future life. On the other hand, a connection has been built between Antonia and her surrounding society in ââ¬ËMy Antoniaââ¬â¢.No caring aspect of the society has been highlighted in the story as compared to ââ¬ËAge of innocenceââ¬â¢. Men that surround Antonia are shown to follow no rules and morals of their society, as it is evident in case of her first fiance fleei ng and abandoning Antonia pregnant before marriage, making her face shame in front of the society and her family. Changes take place in Antonia as she faces these tragedies being alone until life blesses her with a husband and ten children giving her a peaceful and a protected life on the farms. There is no connection between the characters and their society in case of ââ¬ËA Farewell to Armsââ¬â¢. The main reason being the background of the novel, as it was written in the time of First World War when the only matter under consideration is saving oneââ¬â¢s own self from death. Wars are defined as tragic thereby any story emerging from these times is tragic. The story highlights a tragic love story that sets in the First World War surrounding a soldier who gives up his military career for the fear of death.Solders think about the universe as being an unordered and an unprotected existence with no God to watch over with no evidence of justice in the surroundings. Morality, dign ity, and honor are nowhere to be seen in the surroundings were war takes place. Emphasis is given to the brutality, injustice, and futility that follows the war as Henry escapes his cynical thoughts about the universe being disordered with the help of Catherine. Henry in the novel is shown to have a strong disbelief in God thereby there was no belief in faith having a relationship with life and morality.A strong atheistic belief existed in Henry and his peers linking it with nil existence of faith thus no morality, justice and no need of moral rules in the society. Henry is shown to understand the meaning of life by the ways he struggles to escape the interrogation and execution in the hands of the police. As the name of the novel indicates, Henry says farewell to not only the arms and his military career by making an escape but also to the cynical philosophy that he held about life.Understanding that struggles can be a part of life, Henry struggles to reunite with Catherina, althou gh defeat waits in the end. However, all that matters in the end is to realize the meaning of an existence of the universe and a God. Thus, there is no connection of this novel with the other two novels, as the other two novels do not talk about disbelief in the existence of universe and morality. In fact, the characters in the other two novels have been shown to live in a society built around principles of morality.A strong role has been suggested by the two novels in the lives of its characters but there is no belief in society nor its existence in the case of third novel thereby there is no role of society being played in the betterment of the life of its characters in ââ¬ËA Farewell to Armsââ¬â¢. Conclusion There is a prominent contrast in the three novels. First novel ââ¬ËAge of Innocenceââ¬â¢ talks about shaping an individualsââ¬â¢ life based on rules and regulations that are shaped by a society and families that surrounds him; as these morals promise to protect the individuals.Second novel talks about the slow transitions that take place in the life of an individual living in a society with individuals not following morality to protect an individual. In the third novel, the main theme is a change in the philosophy of an individual about life and the universe while struggling to reunite with his love while escaping death. Works Cited Johnson, D. Competitive Advantage of Wal Mart Essay
Every company is trying to avoiding failure and the goal is to have a sustaining competitive advantage. But when do companies have a sustainable competitive advantage? It depends on three factors: the barriers to imitation, the capability of competitors and the dynamism of the industry development. In the 1970s Wal Mart lost their competitive advantage. Sears had a better positioning like Wal Mart. Therefore Wal Mart distinguished the situation and improved its distribution system. It created new trade channels to save costs and invest in new information technology to improve their situation. Wal Mart found a way to change their strategies and structures to change their competitive conditions. Over time, Wal Mart got strong partnerships with suppliers. This was a key element to improve their performance on the market and it`s not easy to imitate. Those partnerships work now since a long time and other competitors might lack the volume of purchases Wal Mart can offer. With some diversifications like Samââ¬â¢s Club, a new way of supercenters or their plan for the international expansion Wal Mart was able to confine from their competitors. Wal-Mart was the first low price company and retailer which expanded around the world. The CEO of Wal Mart focused on small-town markets and ignored the national discounters. So, Wal Mart has huge distribution capabilities and this is very difficult to imitate from competitors. The most significant advantage of Wal Mart is their using of the satellite system. They are using this system to compress their costs and get a distinguished communication system with all employees to every time. The overall achieved employee satisfaction has the advantage of highly motivated employees. This is an overall management issue and when the employees are motivated, the customers are feeling good and well served. In future, Wal-Mart was committed to find new ways to have the competitive advantage of the market. They invest in different strategies like trendy fashions, offering organic food and remodeling stores to achieve a high satisfaction during the shopping by customers. So, they were able to use the economic crisis to win new customers. A lot of people search after low price shopping possibilities. So investors cheered at Wal-Mart and the company outperformed both rival target and the S&P 500 index. Wal Mart holds its quality due to the constant low priced policy. This EDLP is not easy to replicate unless you can offer consistently low prices. On account of the points Wal Mart is able to secure a sustaining competitive advantage at the moment. They are reacting directly and design their company with the time and respond on their employees and customers. Their competitors are able to imitate their policies but this can`t happen within the next year because Wal Marts` advantages are way to complex. As long as Wal Mart is always developing its competencies and keeping on track with the environmental changes, they do have a sustainable competitive advantage in the US.

Innovation and Business Growth Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Innovation and Business Growth - Essay Example Where do the other ideas or research efforts go They get into the vast Knowledge Management databases which is available to the organization as part of core business knowledge for future reference. All these products are a result of dollar intensive and highly sophisticated research which actually delves into the minds of end-consumers in a very concerted effort to focus the mind of the consumer on the company's products, services and processes. It was a quirk of an idea to increase the diameter of the tooth paste tube's nozzle by a millimeter in an effort to increase annual sales of tooth paste at Unilever. This of course caught like a wild fire and is much quoted as an example of business smartness and innovation. In this case, the above stated ides is t R & D for a global FMCG company. All it took the Australian phone company to reduce its bleed on local calls was introduction of a lead ring into the handsets of telephones. This lead ring fatigued the hands of the users who started disconnecting calls much earlier than the previous endless hours of conversation. A simple but a powerful idea directly impacted the network utilization as well as bottom lines of the Australian telephone network. That's R & D for a large telecom operator (Bono, 2003). There was this person who stuck post-it sheets with the names of the car owners on the insides of the fuel cap covers and this person spoke to each and every customer using their names. Sales increased dramatically. This person was trying to leverage customer experience at the gas station, researched to find out that people love to be addressed by their names. That's nothing but R & D for a micro enterprise (B, 2006). Xerox that spent billions of dollars in getting new products to the market place failed miserably and was bleeding at the point of machine replacements in 72 hours. As part of their service level agreement, Xerox innovated its post sales service delivery mechanism to come up with almost instantaneous resolution of over 98% of customer complaints thereby reducing the bleed due to machine replacement promise to almost nil. Today various Corporates are investing billions of dollars to leverage the R & D knowledge at the market place and this paper will specifically look at the innovations at Unilever - Unipath, Xerox - PARC and Ntt - MBD. A Product/Service - Its importance Most of the organizations, once having introduced a product / service into the market place, leverage of two different types of research. The first type of research is to find out what the consumer wants or even has in his mind. The second type of research is to how to move the current product line or introduce a new product line to meet those expectations in the mind of the consumer. It is more often in the second type of research work, which new product identification happens. Also it is in the second type of research that companies often file for patents; develop knowledge that may be leveraged in future. Marketing begins with the identification of consumer needs and wants, and culminates with successfully

Community-Oriented Policing (COP) and Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) Assignment
Community-Oriented Policing (COP) and Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) - Assignment Example The term stands for Scanning, Analysis, Response and Assessment. 2. The most essential component necessary for implementing a COP program would be the need for more community interaction between police officers and local citizens (Hunter & Barker 2011). In addition, there must also be the desire by the community to help with strategic planning in a proactive atmosphere, recruit volunteers to help police as eyes and ears to the community, and the patrol range must be manageable by the police in order to make rounds at least a good number of times for a more effective police presence (Craven 2009). 3. In the case of the POP programs, there has to be a very evident problem which requires strategic thinking and planning for the accomplishment of goals. This usually means there must be a goal for eliminating a specific crime in a certain part of the community. Car theft which might be on the rise, means that police patrols may need to set up stings for catching thieves and to also change their usual schedules by showing up at different times than when normally expected (SARA 2013). 4. The most desirable outcomes for implementing either a COPS or POP program is to accomplish goals which make the community a better place to live and work in (Hunter & Parker 2011). Whenever a community feels threatened by criminal activity, then the citizens live in fear and this means that people will sometimes clam up to the police, creating a rift between the two groups (Depsey & Forst 2013). It is essential for the police to get the citizens on the side of the police officers and to promote working together on patrols and in community programs (Craven 2009; Hunter & Parker 2011). 5. Some of the greatest challenges for implementing a COPS or POP program is that police department funds may have been cut, thus reducing hours allowed on the street for neighborhood patrols. Additionally, cuts in technology funding might mean that officers may lose the means for interacting

Literature review - Essay Example (Murdin and Errington 2005:56) A significant body of recent research has explored the processes associated with ruptures in the therapeutic alliance (Safran et al. 1990). In another, similar, piece of research, Hill et al. (1996) carried out a survey of counsellors concerning their experience of impasse in their work with clients. The findings of these studies are consistent with the view of Mearns (1994) that lack of therapeutic progress, or what he terms stuckness, is often associated with over- or under-involvement on the part of the counsellor. (McLeod 2003:335) This stuckness has also been often revealed as not so much the lack of apparent progress, but possibly a symptom of something else. Some therapist fell that it is an outcropping of anger and hurt emotions that often trigger the event. (Whelton and Greenberg 2004:117) This is something that the counsellor needs to put into perspective and it can often be the clinicians responsibly to find the cause for this anger and hurt. This mired down feeling is starting to wear on you. Stay with the stuck feeling for awhile and see what images come to mind. Whats the glue thats holding you and the client in place? Reflect on your discomfort with this ââ¬Ëstuckness.ââ¬â¢ What might this client be here to teach you? Just as a reality check, working with a chronically depressed client can be draining, and at times I have felt similarly tired and frustrated. (Pearson 2006) Maltreatment at an early age can also be the beginning of low self-esteem and could certainly be the early stages of a learned helplessness state from which it is perceived that is no apparent benefit in the given environment and therefore the client become stuck. This is the beginning of low self-esteem and poor self-concept. These assumptions and beliefs taken as fact over time create a situation of what

Thearatical model of integration Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Thearatical model of integration - Essay Example Early behavioral approaches did not directly investigate the role of cognition and person centered processes in the development or maintenance of emotional disorders. Person centered therapy is based on the clinical application of the more recent, but now also extensive research into the prominent role of cognitions in the development of emotional disorders. The term ââ¬ËPerson Centered Therapyââ¬â¢ (PCT) is variously used to refer to therapy based on the pragmatic combination of principles of person centered theories. New PCT interventions are keeping pace with developments in the academic discipline of psychology in areas such as attention, perception, reasoning, decision making etc. Person centered and/or client centered psychotherapists work with individuals, families and groups. The approaches can be used to help anyone irrespective of ability, culture, race, gender or sexual preference. Person centered and/or behavioral psychotherapies can be used on their own or in conjunction with medication, depending on the severity or nature of each clientââ¬â¢s problem. The father of this school of thought was the infamous Sigmund Freud, who about a century ago changed the entire perspective on how humanity used to view the structure of personality. Though largely controversial, yet ironically the words his critics use to highlights defects in him, are also given to the scientific world by Freud himself. By far, his greatest of contributions to the science of psychology is the concept of ââ¬Ëunconsciousââ¬â¢, and his attempt to interpret dreams. Before him, for centuries, understanding behavior was considered to be the job of physiologists and philosophers. It was after him, that truly the birth of an individual science of psychology came into existent, which had concepts, theories and hypotheses, which were specific to the specialization of this science alone. ââ¬Å"Traditional psychoanalysis is quite complex and time consuming,â⬠(Brown, 2000, p. 121). Myself as a Psychological Researcher Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Myself as a Psychological Researcher - Essay Example It involves four important goals to achieve in order to answer what it seeks. The paragraph below will identify and explain the choices I will make as a career after graduation a psychological researcher particularly in three fields of psychology. My area of interest is particularly in the field of Cognitive, developmental and social psychology. Cognitive Psychology is defined as the study of the mental processing of information received by the senses relayed to the brain for analysis and interpretation thereby generating reactions and response. Developmental study on the other hand is related with the way the mental facets along with the senses develops and functions. Together with Cognitive psychology, the developmental Psychology explains how and why people react and respond to certain external stimulus, and dictates how we make use of logic and comprehension once the external stimulus occurs again. Social Psychology on the other hand studies about human behavior, all together they are interrelated these studies explains how man interacts and relates with the world. This interests me because I believe this the most logical and definitive way we understand even the most complex of all behavior.

ARGUMENTATIVE, COMPARE AND CONTRAST Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
ARGUMENTATIVE, COMPARE AND CONTRAST - Essay Example The article is well written and presents its argument in a logical manner. First, Cloud (2008) presents the idea brought forward by John McCardell Jnr. that the drinking age should be lowered after several conditions have been met. He also presents McCardell argument that restricting alcohol to those below 18 years old raises its appeal thereby encouraging binge drinking. After presenting these views, Cloud (2008) begins his arguments using statistics. He notes that data provided shows that there has been no major shift in binge drinking since the age restrictions were put in place. He argues that binge drinking has in fact dropped from 40.7% in 1984 to 38.1% in 2006. In response to McCardellââ¬â¢s argument of unsupervised drinking, Cloud (2008) notes that even if the drinking age was to be lowered, there would be no one to supervise the 18-21 year olds. His final argument is that while lowering the drinking age may end infantilizing of college students, it may increase deaths on highways. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic fatalities and accidents connected with drinking have improved considerably since the restrictions were put in place. Sunders (2008) holds a different view and believes that college students between the ages of 18 and 21 are mature enough to drink. She also looks at McCardellââ¬â¢s argument that the drinking age should be lowered and that Washington should open the debate to look at amending the minimum drinking age. Her main argument is that the law is null and void since most people do not believe that the minimum drinking age works. Her arguments are also based on statistics and she argues that half of those between 18 and 21 year old have consumed alcohol despite the prohibitions placed by the law. She presents an argument forwarded by MADD that the minimum drinking age saves lives through the reduction of traffic accidents. She also notes that this fact has been supported by

Textual analysis of Glamour Girls Essay Example for Free
Textual analysis of Glamour Girls Essay One example of a convention used in many documentaries which is seen in Glamour Girls is voyeurism. This is used because the audience are made to look in on something which they wouldnt usually do such as the models being filmed while on their photo shoots. This leads to another example used in Glamour Girls being the location. There are shots of the locations used in the documentary because it shows the reality of what being a glamour girl is like. There are many talking head shots used in interviews because they are confessional and is used to also show what the girls are like compared to what they are perceived as. Glamour Girls explores the issues of body image and the ideology of beauty. This emphasis the way that body image is an important part of the Glamour Girls lifestyles. This leads the documentary to explore the lifestyles of the models, getting up close and personal to show the reality of modeling to the audience. The message given to the audience in Glamour Girls is that to be a model, you have to be size zero. It also shows that the industry is very harsh to models, especially if they arent thin enough or because of the way they look. The female voice over is used in Glamour Girls reinforces the target audience which makes the documentary shown as a more feminine domain. This is because females are more wary as to what they look like and they compare themselves to girls which they see in magazines. Conflict is used to attract the audience because it shows the way the glamour girls compete against each other to look the best. This puts pressure on the girls because they want to look the best out of other glamour girls. During the title sequence, the female voice-over makes the preferred meaning obvious because they show found images from archives. The way in which the titles attract a younger audience to watch the documentary is the use of young dance music which is popular within the younger audiences. The main locations used in the documentary which are used include the shoots because it shows the main part of being a glamour girl. There are shots of the main office of the modeling agency to show what happens and what they do. One shot used is on a beach. This reinforces the theme of sex because of the way the glamour girls are posing. During the documentary, there are some visuals which are black and white. These are used because it shows the past and what happened before the shoots. It also shows the progression of time. There are different ways in which the characters in the documentary have been created through camera and editing include showing close ups of beauty products. Another way is through the panning shot of the body. Both of these examples reinforces the idea of having to be thin and beautiful to be seen as a glamour model. The age represented in Glamour Girls makes the documentary shown as more extreme because of the way in which they reference the age of the girls seen on the show. This makes more of the younger viewers worry about what they look like because of the age of the models. Experts are used in the show because they tell you what you have to do to be a glamour model and give you an insight as to what it is like to be a glamour model. Because they are shown as the experts on the documentary, they are seen as trustworthy while being instructive. Glamour Girls, and other documentaries in the same style, are more acceptable for BBC3 to broadcast because of the audience which are more drawn to the channel. It is also seen as more of an entertainment rather than serious which is seen more on channel4. These types of programs have more fashion style images and themes.

Nanogels for Anticancer Drug Delivery
Nanogels for Anticancer Drug Delivery The applications of Nanogels in the field of medicine are currently under rapid growth of interest with more focus given on improving current therapies and diagnostic modalities. Nanogels composed of ionic or non-ionic network of amphiphilic polymer chains, when dispersed in aqueous media swell to considerable volume. Biological agents and drugs can be loaded into the nanogel by physical and chemical interactions between the agent and the functional group in the polymer matrix, resulting in unique class of polymeric nanocarrier with high dispersion stability. The most attractive features of the nanogels include high biocompatibility, versatility in design, and controlled release of payload with wide range of drug loading and release, the specificity and ability to physically protect biological molecules from degradation invivo and have been preclinically investigated for different anticancer drugs. In a study on targeted nanogels done by Baklaushev et al, the therapeutic efficacy of cisplatin loaded nanogels was checked on glioma cells 101/8. Nanogels synthesised using PMAA polymer cross-linked with CaCl2. Nanogels upon EDC activation cross-linked to monoclonal antibodies Cx43 and BSAT1 specific for targeting gliomal cells along with flexible PEG linker resulting in a size of 123 à ± 5 nm, with a zeta potential of -15à ±5 mV. Targeted nanogels significantly reduced the intrastriatal glioma compared to the control group receiving 5% dextrose up to the 30th day of the study. But no significance was observed for animals treated with targeted nanogels and free cisplatin. Heparin-polyethyleneimine (HPEI)nanogels loaded with cisplatin along with shRNA were synthesised by Lili Liu et al for targeting CLDN3 gene up regulated in ovarian cancer. These nanogels showed superior biodegradability, excellent blood compatibility and low-toxicity. Western blot analysis and CLDN3 immunostainin g were done to check the knockdown efficiency. Nude mice bearing intraperitoneal ovarian carcinomas were treated with drug loaded nanogels and the results showed that pshCLDN3/HPEI effectively suppressed the expression of CLDN3 in ovarian cancer along with synergistic antitumor activity when compared to cisplatin alone, along with low systemic toxicity. Nukolova NV et al loaded cisplatin into PEG-b-PMAA nanogels conjugated with (D-Lys6)-LHRH. With a loading efficiency of 35%, the nanogel showed receptor based cytotoxicity cells positive for LHRH showed greater uptake and cytotoxicity compared to LHRH negative ovarian cancer cells. Invivo antitumor activity was more for LHRH-nanogels with less toxicity compared to equimolar dose of free cisplatin and untargeted nanogels. A pH and thermal responsive nanogelwas developed for cisplatin delivery by conjugating the MAA, NIPAm, mPEGMA with MBA as the cross-linker. The pH response is achieved with breaking the bond between COOH and cisplati n in presence of the chlorine ion present in the human body. The acidic response is modified by incorporating thermal responsive NIPAm, this will slow down the cisplatin release from the nanogel structure. Cellular uptake was mainly localized in cytoplasm. Invivo antitumor activity using breast cancer mice modals showed better activity with longer circulation time. In the study by Jin et al, controlled delivery of cisplatin to ovarian cancer cells SKOV-3 were achieved using a biodegradable nanogel made by cocondensation polymerization of piperazine with 2,2-bis(acryloxymethyl)propionic acid, PEG 2,2-bis(acryloxymethyl)propionate macromonomer (mPEG). Carboxylic acid-functionalized poly(beta -aminoester)graft-poly(ethylene glycol) nanogels were size of around 200nm, negatively charged with water soluble nature. The cytotoxicity of nanogels on SKOV-3 cells were significantly lower than the free cisplatin whereas the invivo activity towards SKOV3 tumor xenografted immunecompromised mice was same. According to Jin et al, this decrease in cytotoxicity of cisplatin loaded nanogel on SKOV-3 cells due to the drug release kinetics which showed an initial burst release, making the response of cisplatin similar to that of free cisplatin. Also negatively charged nanogel will limit the cellular internalization delaying the cisplatin response. Only with biodistribution studies the similarity in the activity of free cisplatin and nanogel loaded cisplatin be proved. Maeda et al synthesised water soluble à ²-1, 3-glucan schizophyllan (SPG) nanogel which can be recognized by an immunocyte receptor called dectin-1. When naphthalene introduced into the side chain of SPG (nSPG), it formed nanogel by physical cross-link and gained capability to ingest hydrophobic compounds such as doxorubicin. The in vitro assay revealed that this nanogel can be used as specific delivery of anti-cancer drugs to immunocytes. A dual-responsive prodrug nanogel system that shows very low unspecific drug leaching, but efficient intracellular release of the payload triggered by the intracellular conditions. This dual-responsive prodrug nanogel was prepared by an inverse nanoprecipitation method, which is mild and surfactant free, and based on a thiol-disulfide exchange reaction and thiol-Michael addition reaction. Highly biocompatible hyperbranched polyglycerol (hPG) was cross-linked with disulfide bonds, to obtain biodegradable nanogels, which could be degraded under intracellular reductive conditions. Doxorubicin (DOX) was conjugated to the biodegradable nanogel matrix via an acid-labile hydrazone linker. Two different prodrug nanogels were prepared with a size of approximately 150nm, which is big enough to take the advantage of the enhanced permeation and retention (EPR) effect in tumor tissue . Cell culture analysis by microscopy and flow cytometry revealed that the prodrug nanogels were efficiently internalized by tumor cells. Distinct release profiles of DOX were achieved by adjusting the nanogel architecture, and online detection of cytotoxicity showed that, unlike free DOX, the dual-responsive prodrug nanogels exhibited a delay in the onset of toxicity, indicating the different uptake mechanism and the need for prodrug activation to induce cell death. To achieve effective intracellular anticancer drug delivery, the polymeric vesicles supplemented with the pH-responsive outlayered gels as a delivery system of doxorubicin (DOX) were developed from self-assembly of the lipid/polypeptide adduct, distearin grafted poly(à ³-glutamic acid) (poly(à ³-GA)), followed by sequential deposition of chitosan and poly(à ³-GA-co-à ³-glutamyl oxysuccinimide)-g-monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) in combination with in situ covalent cross-linking on assembly surfaces. The resultant g el-caged polymeric vesicles (GCPVs) showed superior performance in regulating drug release in response to the external pH change. Under typical physiological conditions (pH 7.4 and 37 à °C) at which the à ³-GA/DOX ionic pairings remained mostly undisturbed, the dense outlayered gels of GCPVs significantly reduced the premature leakage of the uncomplexed payload. With the environmental pH being reduced from pH 7.4 to 4.7, the drug liberation was appreciably promoted by the massive disruption of the ionic à ³-GA/DOX complexes along with the significant swelling of nanogel layers upon the increased protonation of chitosan chain segments. After being internalized by HeLa cells via endocytosis, GCPVs exhibited cytotoxic effect comparable to free DOX achieved by rapidly releasing the payload in intracellular acidic endosomes and lysosomes. This strongly implies the great promise of such unique GCPVs as an intracellular drug delivery carrier for potential anticancer treatment. The tripl e layered nanogel developed by Xiong MH et al, can deliver the drug doxorubicin specifically in the bacteria accumulated tumor environment. The bacteria SBY1 can selectively infect and proliferate in tumors owing to the unique environment within solid tumors, including hypoxia, aberrant neovasculature, and local immune suppression is more in tumor compared to the normal tissue; upon nanogel administration these bacteria will trigger the selective degradation of the PCL fence of TLND resulting in DOX release and thus killing tumor cells. Chitin PLA composite nanogel were loaded with Doxorubicin (Dox) for the treatment of liver cancer. Nanogels were of size of around 270à ±20 nm with higher swelling and degradation in acidic pH. Drug entrapment efficiency and in vitro drug release studies were carried out and showed a higher drug release at acidic pH compared to neutral pH. The cytotoxicity of the composite nanogels was analysed toward HepG2 (human liver cancer) cell lines.

Disney Movie Analysis: Lady and the Tramp
Disney Movie Analysis: Lady and the Tramp Zeinab Kobeissi Abstract Lady and the Tramp is a Disney cartoon considered one of their classics and based on Disneyââ¬â¢s conventional plot which circles around two main protagonists comprised of the damsel in distress, Lady, and the hero who comes to her rescue, Tramp. This essay aims to examine reinforced stereotypes, stigmas and certain roles that are portrayed through characters in The Lady and the Tramp, while also discussing the influence and the insights of the protagonists in the cartoon. Keywords: Hollywood, Disney, misrepresentations, stereotypes, stigmas Lady and the Tramp There is a very typical Disney scenario that is present in ââ¬Å"Lady and the Trampâ⬠. There is always a damsel in distress that needs to be rescued, and in this particular animation it is a Cocker Spaniel called Lady, that is owned by a married couple that lives in a wealthy suburban region, and is quite pampered. She is a good-looking female dog with big inviting eyes, long and thick eyelashes and a groomed coat. She is comparable to other Disney female characters like the little mermaid, Cinderella, Snow White, etc. because she embodies the stereotypical beautiful and attractive female. For every damsel in distress there is always a hero ready to save her. The hero here is called, Tramp; a free spirited ladiesââ¬â¢ man. Surprisingly, he doesnââ¬â¢t fit into the traditional male hero role when it comes to his appearance (a street dog) but, like all heroes, he ends up winning the femaleââ¬â¢s heart and they live happily ever after together. According to Disneyââ¬â¢s Dolls article, archetypal Disney characters who are generally young females are in their nature happy and remain in suspended animation awaiting a man who would give them a life of adventure and meaning (Kathie Maoi, 1998). Here, Tramp rescues Lady after she is attacked by dogs that pursued her when she escaped from her fosterââ¬â¢s house. Lady was under the care of Jim Dear and Darling, right until Tramp came along. Although Lady is not a human, she is nonetheless created with some makeup on, shaped eyebrows, long feminine eyelashes with big blue eyes and flowing hair; groomed and physically taken care of, unlike Tramp. Her speech is also quite refined and reflects a rather high status as a dog. Lady is purely another version of other Disney female characters that are repeatedly depicted as dependent, powerless damsels that fall into danger and require a male hero to save them from the trenches. (TV Tropes, n.d). The plot of the movie itself is not as complex as other Disney animations since here there are no actual villains but instead situations that simply oppose the two protagonists, like Aunt Sarah (the temporary foster) and the dog catchers. It is still however, a story centered on love and romance, highlighted in scenes like when Tramp invited Lady out for on a date at an Italian restaurant and they ended up kissing, and when he ultimately won her heart by attacking the rat at the end. The animation in its core is somewhat different from other classical Disney movies since all the leading characters are dogs. The supporting characters are the Siamese cats and the two human men Tony and Joe, the Italian owner/manager and chef. It still however presents characters that are charged with Asian, Mexican, Russian and Italian stereotypes. The Siamese cats in the movie, Si and Am, are represented with clichà ©d Asian manners of speech and typical slanted eyes. Their personalities are quite sneaky and cunning, always plotting and do not have the best of intentions. They even trashed the houseââ¬â¢s living room where Lady was living, attempted to devour the pet fish, and even put the blame on Lady for the clutter that they themselves caused. Siamese cats in their nature however, are actually quite affectionate, reliable, and friendly, so their real characteristics were not reflected, but instead presented under false stereotypes of Siamese cats and of cats in general (Pet Wave, n.d). ââ¬Å"Lady and the Trampâ⬠was released soon after the Korean War ended and stereotypes of Asians were very widespread in the states, which explains the hidden implication of the Siamese cats. There is also the Chihuahua, Pedro, who lives in the dog pound and of course, has exaggerated Mexican traits and features. He is given a heavy Latino accent and actually says that he is in the country illegally. He appears only in the scene where Lady is taken to the dog pound after she is caught, and he is doing nothing except sitting in a pile of straw throughout the entire scene. He only says two lines in the whole movie; ââ¬Å"pardon me, amigo. What is this ââ¬Ëchili heel?â⬠and ââ¬Å"my sister Rosita Chiquita Juanita Chihuahua, I thinkâ⬠, both indicating the typical Mexican stereotypes of them having long names and being uneducated, obviously generalizing and misrepresenting (Pierre, 1999). These are among the standard stereotypes of Mexicans that are still evident today, continuously ââ¬Å"[they are] portrayed as illiterate criminalsâ⬠¦lazy, dirty, and physically unattractiveâ⬠(Holder, 2012). There is also Boris, a Russian wolfhound that has a heavy Russian accent and is seen as the philosopher and deep thinker in the dog pound scene. Here there is more of a positive stereotypical representation of Russians that indeed portrays how Russians were once the heart of European philosophy, but is still a stereotype nonetheless. As a matter of fact, it was refreshing to see a constructive portrayal of Russians as they are often linked to the Mafia in American media (Ferguson, n.d.). There are also Toni and Joe who work at Toniââ¬â¢s restaurant, where the Tramps took Lady for their dinner date, who are both based on predictable Italian stereotypes as being chubby and jovial people who speak in a heavy accent and always use fast hands gestures. This is also a stereotype that steered away from the expected Mafia/gang association that is shown in mainstream media, but nevertheless does not reflect the truths of all Italians (Ferguson, n.d.). Some other representations are present in this Disney movie that are not exactly grounded on stereotypes but more on stigmas and positive images. The scene of the rat creeping into the babiesââ¬â¢ room at the end of the movie to bite him does not seem very credible, and there exists a repetitive stigma of rats being wicked, crafty, and filthy, regularly correlated with disease and grime (TV Tropes, n.d.). Although the rat is not given an identity or a name, it is reproduced in such a negative light that the audience can easily form a negative image of rats in real life. When it comes to positive images, Ladyââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ neighbors, Jock and Trusty who are also her friends, are given positive roles that mirror true dog qualities such as outgoingness and devotion and even the obsession of burying bones in the yard (TV Tropes, n.d.). It is safe to say that Lady and the Tramp is a typical cartoon that is full of stereotypes and unreasonable beauty standards that are recurrently seen in other Disney classics. It heavily displays stereotypes that ultimately generate stigmas on particular ethnic groups like Asians and Latinos, which eventually lead to outbursts of aggression towards such minorities (Ferguson, n.d.). This warps the perceptions of such races and nationalities and even some animals, as in the case of the rat and cats as a whole, for young viewers who are exposed to these (mis)representations (Ferguson, n.d.). Lady and the Tramp is still probably a less intense version of other Disney movies that are fueled with heavy stereotypes, such as Aladdin, who rely greatly on negative stigma to formulate images of certain groups of peoples that usually end up being very far from accurate. The Sum of All Fears: An Analysis of Institutional Discrimination in the Housing Market and its Effects on The District of Columbia :: Free Essays Online
The Sum of All Fears: An Analysis of Institutional Discrimination in the Housing Market and its Effects on The District of Columbia Owning a home in the neighborhood of oneââ¬â¢s choice is central to the American dream. Nearly all people would agree that the right to pursue the American dream should not be restricted for anyone, regardless of race, creed or national origin. But for millions of American citizens, and a majority of the District of Columbiaââ¬â¢s residents, major barriers restrict freedom of choice in housing. Even after the passage of two Fair Housing Acts, blacks in America, and specifically in the District, face systematic discrimination that serves to perpetuate segregation and white oppression. After being informed about the topic of this essay, my friend Robert Botta, a Mount Vernon Campus resident asked, ââ¬Å"Why can I walk around this neighborhood all day and not see a black person in a city that is greater than 60 percent black?â⬠(Botta). This question has an extremely important answer, and it lies in the practices used by racist institutions to perpetuate segregation. In our day, the most effective practices are also the most discrete. Steering is the process by which real estate agents show blacks only the homes in ââ¬Å"theirâ⬠neighborhoods. It is also the first institutional barrier faced by blacks in a struggle for freedom of choice in housing. Obviously steering perpetuates segregation, leading whites and blacks only to neighborhoods where their races are already predominant. In April 1997 the Fair Housing Council of Greater Washington, with funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, released a report citing discrimination encountered by African Americans and Latinos when they tried to buy a home in the Washington area. A Washington Post article by Caroline Mayer details the results of the study and conveys the prevalence of steering in the Washington area: White testers tended to receive more prompt attention and were shown more properties within their price range and in predominantly white areas, the report said. Minority testers, on the other hand, were taken to fewer properties and were shown houses in predominantly black or Latino areas. Blacks were often told that they must qualify for a mortgage before being shown any lists; the same requirement was not made of any white tester. (2) Unfortunately, the real estate industry is not the only institutional barrier that blacks must overcome.

Analysis of The Best Little Girl in the World :: Best Little Girl in the World Essays
Analysis of The Best Little Girl in the World à The author of my book is Steven Levenkron. Warner Books published this book in September of 1978 in New York, NY. The genre of my book is fiction with suspense. The Best Little Girl in the World could be based on a true story, but it is not completely true to life. It would fall under the suspense category because the reader does not know if Kessa will live or die. The all-important purposes of this book are to inform and to narrate. The author does a nice job of achieving his purpose. I am now aware of the many dangers of the deadly disease being described. Steven Levenkron has many qualifications. He is a ââ¬Å"practicing psychotherapist with a specialty in eating disordersâ⬠(The Best Little Girl in the World page 2). He has been a ââ¬Å"clinical consultant at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center as well as the Center for the study of Anorexia and Bulimia in New York Cityâ⬠(page 2). He is also a ââ¬Å"current member of ANAD of Highland Park, Illinoisâ⬠(page 2). This book does have a few weaknesses but more strengths. A weakness would have to be the ending. It is not eventful. I was hoping for a surprise of some sort, and it never came. However, I noted many strengths. The descriptive details seem great. Although the details appear rather gross at points, I think that is a good thing. That way a reader discovers the harsh reality of the disease. ââ¬Å"The thinner is the winnerâ⬠(The Best Little Girl in the World Steven Levenkron page 25). This is a powerful quote because thinness is what the whole story is based upon. Kessa thinks that the thinner she is the better. She is most definitely proved wrong in the end. I noted three main settings used in this book. The Best Little Girl in the World takes place in the year of 1979. The first one is the Dietrichââ¬â¢s home. Their apartment is located in New York City. The second location is at Francescaââ¬â¢s dancing studio downtown. The third location where the action takes place is in the hospital. Kessa is in the hospital for about three months, and then she is released to live at home. Four main characters are present in this book. They happen to be Kessa, Lila, Grace and Harold.

Manage Domiciliary Services Essay
As a healthcare provider we have to ensure we have the correct amount of staff as well as staff with the right skill set and qualifications on shift which meets the needs of the people we are supporting. We do this by implementing standards from the beginning which includes the recruitment process. Our recruitment is robust but is constantly changing to ensure potential new staff are people that is right to be in healthcare, someone can fail at any time of the recruitment process. Our recruitment process includes: 1. Telephone Interview 2. Face to face Interview 3. 2 Day mandatory Training 4. Induction and final interview 5. 12 weeks probation Indicators that a potential new member of staff can fail in our recruitment process: a. Not understanding the importance for a client to maintain their independence b. Not understanding the importance for a clientââ¬â¢s dignity and respect c. Not understanding the importance of working over a 7 day period d. Not participating in activities in mandatory training e. Not completing the Common Induction Standards f. Not completing courses in the 12 week probation period g. Not meeting the levels of reliability set out All members of staff that do not have a NVQ 2 when starting with E-Spire Healthcare must complete the Common Induction Standards within the first 12 weeks of commencing work with the company, after this period they can then proceed with NVQ level 2, which is encouraged, we rely on our local college to provide this support. When a new member of staff starts with E-Spire Healthcare they must first complete induction and shadow shifts without senior staff, only once the senior member of staff has signed them off as competent will they commence their shifts with our clients. This way our senior is able to introduce the new member of staff to our clients but they also have a complete understanding of our clientââ¬â¢s needs and what support they require. Depending on the complexity of our clientââ¬â¢s needs will dependà on which member of staff works with our clients, for instance somebody who has mental health issues will not be asked to complete shifts with that particular client until they have completed the relevant training courses and completed shadow shifts and been signed off by the senior member of staff. There is no maximum number of shadow shifts that a new member of staff needs to complete, this will depend on the individual member of staff, their past work history, qualifications. Myself or the senior member of staff would of completed the necessary paperwork before the commencement of the package including the care plan the clientââ¬â¢s needs, support, risk assessments, medication, and emotional support plans, this way we already have an idea of what type of member of staff will work well with each particular client, as I feel this is a two way process the client and the Support Worker must be able to work together so the client can be motivated to keep their independence but also the Support Worker to enjoy working with each individual client and know they are supporting in the correct way and making a difference in their day to day lives. We also at the paperwork stage will know how many members of staff are required for each shift. Consistency of care is an extremely important factor for us, not only for the client but also the support worker: For the client: 1. They will get to know the member of staff 2. They will be able to open up to them if they have any certain problems 3. They will know that the member of staff understands their needs 4. They will know that they wonââ¬â¢t have to keep explaining how they like specific tasks like to be completed 5. There will be trust between the client and member of staff 6. Personal care tasks will hopefully not be seen as daunting as the same person is with them 7. Trust when it comes to supporting people with their medication For the Support Worker: 1. They will get to know the individual client 2. Will understand how they like tasks to be completed 3. They are confident with how to support individual clients 4. They understand what motivates each individual client And many more reasons. Each individual client has a series of risk assessments completed for theà commencement of support package. This will include, medication, mobility, feeding, personal care as well as the immediate environment that the support worker will be working in. Depending on the individual client will determine how many members of staff will be required. This can depend on their mobility, their mental health, support in the community. If we feel that a package requires a different amount of staff to what is stated from for instance the social worker, we will go back to them and state our findings, but a package will not start until we have the correct amount of staff on each shift, as we need to keep both the client and our staff safe from injury and harm as well as the community too. I have a completed risk assessment attached with this document all personal details have been removed. E-Spire Health care have clear recruitment guidelines in place which all office staff know and understand a nd all abide by. No member of staff can commence with any shadow and induction shifts until we have on file: 1. Phone Interview 2. Face to Face Interview 3. 2 Day Mandatory Training 4. Induction and Final Interview 5. DBS 6. 2 references 7. Staff Members folder signed off by either myself or the director Carl Boulton. We have a excel document which is kept up to date of any potential member of staff that has approached E-Spire Healthcare this way we can ensure that we are not bringing anybody on board that has already tried to get through the recruitment process already. We also have a flow chart so we can refer back at any time if we are ensure of the process. Within healthcare we are supporting clients within their homes or a residential setting, so our staffs reliability and time keeping is essential, however with this said we will always occur a percentage of lateness and sickness, although we do have a procedure to monitor this and we will speak to any member of staff that does not hit the E-Spire targets ( separate occasions of illness within a 6 week period and also the same for lateness), as a company we do need to be prepared for the unexpected and people can fall ill at any time, this is why we have senior staff that their day to day rolesà are shadow and inductions, reviews but to also pick up shifts at any time, we also have a deputy manager who also is able to go out and do shifts at any time. If need be there is also myself to go out to do shifts, but the same procedure applies to us too we must of completed shadow shifts with each client we will be going to, this is why shadow shifts and inductions are so important. Every client is an individual and their needs can change at any time, this can include cancelling shifts due to unforeseen circumstances such as going to hospital, doctorââ¬â¢s appointments, holidays, day trips out. It is our job to ensure that they are able to participate in any activity they need to. Hospital admission for instance is we will keep their shift slot open until they are able to come home, I know how important it is that when someone is able to come home, that they just want to come home, I do not want to be the reason why they are not able to come home, again this is a reason why we have senior staff available this way we can support clients with their task that is important to them. At E-Spire Healthcare and more importantly for myself I donââ¬â¢t want to meet CQC guidelines I want to exceed them, I am not in care to just give everyone the basic needs, I want to be able to provide support for people that is going to enhance their lives, maintain their independence, be emotionally supportive, and support them with the tasks that they need support with. Everything I do I also ask the same question ââ¬Å"is this the type of support that is exceeds my expectations for my parents?â⬠we monitor this by reviewing our clients care plans, speaking to them to see if they have any comments or complaints, asking them to complete questionnaires, which allows us to compile reports to see as a company where we can improve, because I feel we can always improve, if youââ¬â¢re not improving youââ¬â¢re not listening to people. We also complete a 12 week supervision for new members of staff, this goes towards their probationary period, this is a two way meeting with myself and the member of staff to both discuss the progress of the member of staff, it also gives the member of staff to give their opinion on subjects such as training, the clients their progress their needs. It is a document that will remain in each individualââ¬â¢s folder and it is a document that we are both able to refer back to, it includes: The member of staff role and responsibilities How the member of staff is meeting the companyââ¬â¢s objectives and targets Any other training the member of staff feels they need to do Any problems the member of staff may have.à We then complete a target list of training and objectives for the member of staff to complete in the next 6 months, the next supervision would then not be with me as if the member of staff had an issue with myself they would then have the chance to discuss this with another member of staff. I feel this is a fair way to conduct supervisions, as the member of staff may feel more comfortable speaking to another member of the office team, but this way we are still able to improve for everyone. I am so the trainer for E-Spire healthcare but we also use other companies that are open to us which includes: 1. Local Colleges 2. Local District Nurses 3. The local authority I have attached my mandatory training course topics which indicates what is covered over the two days. To prepare myself for the training course I use a multitude of sources which are available to me, so I am fully informed so my information is up to date and informs and skills each individual member of staff so they have the knowledge to be practicable and skilful within their job role. I use: 1. British Red Cross 2. Trainer Courses (completed moving and handling and medication training) 3. CQC 4. Shropshire County Council 5. HSE Website 6. Food.gov.uk 7. You Tube 8. Speaking to clients 9. Personal experiences 10. Fire safe 11. Old Newspaper articles 12. SPIC 13. UK National Statistics

The Women’s Rights in Jackson Era
ââ¬Å"Meekness, humility, gentleness, love, purity, self-renunciation, subjection of willâ⬠¦. The fairest flowers, which our fallen world can produce,â⬠womanâ⬠s virtues, according to the most acceptable definition of the natural order in society (Melder 2). Men and women occupied totally different social situations. Between 1815 and 1840 the circumstances of womenâ⬠s lives changed in a number of ways, especially in education, under law, and in the attitudes influencing womanâ⬠s social status. The most significant phase of American womenâ⬠s education before 1850 was the female seminary movement, which in itâ⬠s serious phase began about 1815. Emma Willard, the founder of one of the earliest seminaries wrote the first ââ¬Å"comprehensive design for a female institution of learning to be circulated in America, Plan for Improving Female Education (Melder 16). In 1821, she began The Troy Female Seminary which became one of the most advanced and famous institutions for educating women in the United States. Catherine Beecher, like Emma Willard, ââ¬Å"sought to change the emphasis in the curriculum from fashionable subjects to more substantial courses, including, Latin, philosophy, history, chemistry, and mathematics. She created The Hartford Female Seminary, considered a model building ââ¬Å"with itâ⬠s large hall seating 150 pupils at writing desks, a library, dressing room, and nine recitation roomsâ⬠(Davis 399). One of the most useful contributions of the seminary movements before 1850 centered around making school teaching a major vocation for women. Women replaced men as teachers first in the New England states during the 1830s, and spread through other regions in the 1840s. ââ¬Å"School reformers believed that the introduction of women teacher would not only be economical, but that the influx of females would raise the quality of instructionâ⬠(Melder 25). Education gave women practical experience in leadership as well as examples to follow, yet produced a double standard in learning, limited opportunities to use their new knowledge, and the pattern of unequal pay for the same work as men. Further evidence of the changing status of American women may be found in the law. According to Blackstoneâ⬠s interpretation of womenâ⬠s legal condition, ââ¬Å"By marriage, the husband and wife are one person in law, that is, the very being, or legal existence of the woman is suspended during the marriageâ⬠offering women little freedom (Melder 120). But in 1823, Maine gave legal protection to the property rights and personal independence of married women who had been deserted by their husbands, and Massachusetts followed in 1835. Then in New York in 1836, came an early proposal to give married women the right to hold independent property. While not many other legal firsts were granted to the womenâ⬠s cause, during the 1830s, American women participated in a series of reform movements which included the use of strong drink, education, and the issue of slavery; each of which would benefit the well-being of the womanâ⬠s cause. Women were finally involved in the formation of meetings, circulating pamphlets and newsletters, while gaining a new since of sisterhood and intellectual independence. Socially, womanâ⬠s position began to change considerably. ââ¬Å"After 1800, middle class American women apparently developed a distinct sense of their appropriate sphereâ⬠(Melder 7). Women were to elevate the intellectual character of her household [and] kindle the fires of mental activity in early childhoodâ⬠(Graves 402). The private home was now the womanâ⬠s domain in keeping the peace and ââ¬Å"practical pietyâ⬠(Melder 8). Womanâ⬠s crowning glory was motherhood; ââ¬Å"in the bearing, nursing, and rearing of her offspring, she could most fully carry out the responsibilities of her appropriate sphereâ⬠(Melder 9). ââ¬Å"The relations between mother and child might hold a key to the solution of many social and moral ills, and perhaps the future of the nation itselfâ⬠(Davis 22). While Elizabeth Cady Stanton omits the word ââ¬Å"obeyâ⬠from her marriage vows, women would be assigned to ââ¬Å"conserve the moral and religious values, especially to transmit these values to succeeding generationsâ⬠(Melder 143). Women were still considered second class citizens, sub-sets of their husbands, and limited mostly to the home and care of the children; much less given any real or significant rights. Women were considered mere objects of beauty, and were looked upon as intellectually and physically inferior to men. The struggle for womenâ⬠s rights was a product of change, challenging conventional attitudes, demanding the end of restrictions, expanding opportunities for women, and helping to organize them nationally. The movementâ⬠s purposes, momentous yet simple, were described by an advocate in 1840: ââ¬Å"I shall claim nothing for ourselves because of our sex, we should demand our recognition as equal members of the human family. The term ââ¬Å"Womanâ⬠s Rightsâ⬠will become obsolete, for none will entertain the idea that the rights of women differ from the rights of men. It is then human rights for which we contendâ⬠(Davis 158).

Critique of the medical research Essay
Introduction (2) What is the purpose of the study? à à à à à à à à à à à The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the various factors for the prolonged pre-hospital delay in African-American with Acute myocardial infarction.à Another purpose of the study is to demonstrate the manner in which perceived racism (experience of racial discrimination) affects the pre-hospital delay. Is the purpose of the study clearly presented? à à à à à à à à à à à The study has demonstrated to a certain extent that several related factors such as ethnic background, medical insurance, presence of a witness (relative or a family member during the attack), marital status, general health status, presence of any systemic disease and perceived racism, do play a very important role in prolonging the time period between the onset of the symptoms and hospitalization.à However, further studies are required to provide more detailed information about these factors. Problem Statement (5) What problem was the study conducted to resolve? à à à à à à à à à à à The study was conducted to determine the factors associated with prolonged pre-hospital delay in African-Americans with acute myocardial infarction than Whites.à It was found that death due to cardiovascular disease claims were significantly higher in African-Americans than any other group.à Besides, the study was also conducted to demonstrate the extent to which perceived racism affects the pre-hospital delay in African-Americans with acute myocardial infarction. How is the problem important for nursing practice? à à à à à à à à à à à Acute myocardial infarction is one of the main causes of death in both, men and women, living in developed countries.à Fatalities due to cardiovascular disease are significantly higher in African-Americans than any other racial group.à The outcome following acute myocardial infarction varies depending on the rapidity at which with reperfusion therapy is provided.à In this treatment intervention, the blood supply to the heart is restored back to normal. Agents that chemically dissolve thrombi (clots formed within the blood vessels) or expand blood vessels (vasodilators) are administered.à Besides, surgical procedures such as angioplasty (reconstruction of the blocked artery), catheterization (insertion of an inflatable balloon-tipped tubular device) or coronary artery bypass (grafting a section of a vein), may also be performed to restore the blood supply to the cardiac tissues. Reperfusion therapy seems to be most valuable when provided within one hour following the development of symptoms and signs of myocardial infarction.à Delay in providing treatment may play an important role in increasing the morbidity and mortality rates of acute myocardial infarction.à As African-Americans take longer time in seeking treatment for the symptoms and signs of acute myocardial infarction than Whites, the outcome will definitely be less favorable in African-Americans.à Hence, measures to lower delay times can be instituted in African-Americans with acute myocardial infarction. Is the problem statement clearly stated? Describe. à à à à à à à à à à à The delay in seeking treatment for the symptoms and signs of acute myocardial infarction are longer in African-Americans than Whites.à As the period between the onset of the symptoms and signs of acute myocardial infarction and institution of treatment plays a very critical role on the outcome of the disorder, the specific factors associated with prolonged pre-hospital delay in African-Americans should be determined.à The problem statement is clearly mentioned. Research Question(s) What is the research question? If not stated, what would you say the research question is? à à à à à à à à à à à A good research question would be ââ¬Å"To study the causes or factors associated with prolonged pre-hospital delay in African-Americans with acute myocardial infarctionâ⬠. Hypotheses What is the hypothesis? If not stated, what would you say the hypothesis is? à à à à à à à à à à à From the study, it is clearly evident that African-Americans take longer time to seek emergency medical help for acute myocardial infarction than whites.à However, perceived racism (actual experience of racial discrimination) did not play an important role. Study Variables What are the independent and dependent variables? Or, if it is a descriptive or correlational design, what are the research variables? à à à à à à à à à à à In this study, a descriptive design is used.à à To determine the factors associated with prolonged pre-hospital delays independent t tests and chi square tests were used.à The independent variable includes ethnic group.à The dependent variables include experience of racial discrimination, sex (males and females), presence of a witness, insurance, marital status, etc. Review of Literature In what way(s) does the literature review support the need for this study? à à à à à à à à à à à The literature obtained during the study only demonstrates the various factors that may prolong the pre-hospital delay in African-Americans.à These factors are however not specific to the African-American group only.à Further studies are needed to show how similar factors could play a role in prolonging the pre-hospital delay in other racial groups. Does the review of literature guide you to the study? à à à à à à à à à à à The review of the literature does guide to the study.à The review demonstrates the current incidence and mortality scenario of acute myocardial infarction in the African-American race.à It also demonstrates the need for immediate reperfusion treatment.à The study also shows how individuals of the African-American race are at a greater risk of developing acute myocardial infarction than Whites.à However, more details need to be provided. Are there existing gaps in the literature identified by the author(s)? à à à à à à à à à à à No, the gaps in the literature are not identified by the author.à The author could have also tried to study other factors that could play an important role in prolonging pre-hospital delays such as educational levels, socio-economic status, urban/rural divide, etc. Theoretical/Conceptual Framework Does the study have a conceptual or theoretical framework? If so, briefly describe the model or framework? à à à à à à à à à à à The study is based on a conceptual framework.à The framework describes several factors associated with prolonged pre-hospital delay such as ethnic group, sex, general health status, insurance status, marital status, etc.à These variables cannot be clearly defined, and only the possible role they play, can be described. Is a rationale stated for the conceptual/theoretical framework? Explain à à à à à à à à à à à The various factors associated with prolonged pre-hospital delay include sex, ethnic group, general health status, insurance position, etc.à As these cannot be clearly defined and only their possible roles are defined, a conceptual framework is suggested. Ethodological aspects Research design What study design is used? à à à à à à à à à à à A descriptive design is being used. In what way(s) is the design used an appropriate one? à à à à à à à à à à à The author is justifying a phenomenon.à Certain variables are being studied which can be determined earlier and later in time. Were pilot study findings used to design the major study? No, pilot studies were not being used.à However, references were being made to previous studies. Name and describe at least two threats to the internal validity of the study design. à à à à à à à à à à à The two threats to the internal validity of the study design include history threat (in which some historic event has occurred which makes the individual aware) and testing threat (in which some form of pretest may make the individual aware of any similar tests in future). Name and describe at least two threats to the external validity of the study design. à à à à à à à à à à à Three threats to the external validity of the study design include different people (results of the study may be due to unusual people), different places (were perhaps the educational background was different) or different time (at which the incidence of acute myocardial infarction were higher than normal). What are the extraneous variables in this study? How are they being controlled for in this study? à à à à à à à à à à à The extraneous variables in this study are the time period between the onset of symptoms of acute myocardial infarction and provision of reperfusion therapy.à African-Americans take significantly longer than whites in seeking treatment for the symptoms of acute myocardial infarction (3.2 hours to 2 hours). Target Population, Sample, and Setting Who is the target population for the study? à à à à à à à à à à à The target population of the study is African-Americans who had acute myocardial infarction. What sampling method was used? à à à à à à à à à à à Quota sampling is being used in this study.à The stratums of the population that have the criteria are selected.à From this stratum, convenience or judgment is used to select the 64 subjects for the study. What are the sample inclusion and exclusion criteria? If not stated, what would you say they are? Inclusion criteria ââ¬â African-Americans, who had acute myocardial infarction, 18 years and older, who could understand and speak English, conscious and properly oriented, living as in their communities independently, had a steady circulatory system. Exclusion (not mentioned) ââ¬â Whites, individual below 18 years of age, non-English speaking, those who were not properly oriented. In what way(s) is the sample large enough? à à à à à à à à à à à The study was reasonably large enough as it was conducted in 5 hospitals, in 2 areas of a state. In what way(s) is the sample representative of the population? à à à à à à à à à à à The sample represents an important portion of the population.à This group is one that acute myocardial infarction can occur.à African-Americans are a major group of USA.à Adults are being used in the study.à Besides, English-speaking portion of the population is being studied. Is the setting appropriate for this study? Explain your answer. à à à à à à à à à à à Yes, the settings are appropriate for this study.à The study s being conducted within a month after the individual had myocardial infarction.à This ensures full recovery from the attack and also fresh memories of the event. Data Collection Describe data collection instrument/measurement tools. à à à à à à à à à à à Data was being collected by personal interview a month after the acute myocardial infarction. In what way is the support for instrument validity and reliability adequate for use in this study? à à à à à à à à à à à The study was being conducted on individuals who were alert, properly oriented, above 18 years of age and who could speak and understand English.à The chance of the results being not reliable was less.à However, some individuals may not exactly remember the pre-hospital delay. In what way(s) are the instruments used appropriate for this study? à à à à à à à à à à à The instruments used were appropriate for the study, as most of the question being asked were based on general facts (such as marital status, insurance, general health status, etc). Describe procedures used for data collection. à à à à à à à à à à à Before conducting the study, approval had been sought from the appropriate institutional review board and all other participating groups.à Then the patients who met the criteria were being selected, from 5 hospitals in 2 areas of the State.à They were being studied from April, 2003 to June, 2004.à The subjects were appropriately diagnosed for acute myocardial infarction based on the history, laboratory tests, ECG and a surgical intervention.à They were interviewed within a month after the attack, to ensure that they had recovered fully, as well as not forgotten details of the event. Data Analysis Are the statistical tests used identified and the values reported? à à à à à à à à à à à Yes, statistical tests are being used in this study, namely: ââ¬â independent t tests and chi square tests.à Values were also being provided from the 2 groups being compared (namely: ââ¬â males V. females, insured V. non-insured, single V. married, etc). Are the statistics appropriate for the level of measurement of each variable, sample size, sampling method, and research questions/hypotheses? à à à à à à à à à à à Yes the statistics are appropriate for each variable, sample size, sampling method and research hypothesis. What is the level of statistical significance used in interpreting the study results? Was this stated or implied? à à à à à à à à à à à The results have been interpreted to the 0.01 level, thus showing that they are reliable.à This was implied. Ethical aspects Ethical issues What way(s) have the rights of human subjects been adequately protected during this study? The human subjects were being adequately protected during the study.à No identity of any subject has been given.à 3 out of the 64 chosen from the study were being allowed to opt out.à The subjects were being adequate amount of time to fully recover from the acute myocardial infarction.à Besides, only individuals above the age of 18 and those who were conscious, alert and well-oriented were chosen. 2. was the research approved and monitored by an Institutional Review Board or similar ethics review committee? à à à à à à à à à à à Yes, only after seeking prior approval from the appropriate institutional review board and all the participative groups, was the study being conducted. Interpretive Aspects Discussion What are two major strengths of the scientific rigor of the study? à à à à à à à à à à à The two major strengths of the scientific rigor of this study includes:- The sampling method used was a quota sampling method, in which the stratums of the population that have the criteria are selected. From this stratum convenience or judgment is used to select the 64 subjects for the study. Independent t tests and chi square tests were being employed to study the several factors associated with prolonged pre-hospital delay. à à à à à à à à à à à These were most appropriate in this case. à à à à à à Do the figures and tables illuminate the presentation of results? à à à à à à à à à à à The figures give us an exact idea of the role each and every factor was playing on the pre-hospital delay.à The figures suggest that the findings are more reliable. à Are study limitations identified? If so, what are the two major limitations of the scientific rigor of the study? à à à à à à à à à à à The two major limitations of the scientific rigor of this study:- The chances of errors in this study are high as the data collecting methods are not appropriate (subject may not remember the period of the pre-hospital delay). The factors associated with prolonged pre-hospital delays may not be specific to the African-American group. The study did not concentrate on several other associated factors such as socio-economic status, rural-urban divide, educational levels, etc. In what way(s) are the implications of the study findings appropriate? à à à à à à à à à à à The study shows that the pre-hospital delay was longer than one hour.à This meant that the individual was not going to benefit much from reperfusion therapy.à The study also showed that perceived racism did not affect the pre-hospital delay much. What recommendations for nursing practice and future research have been made? à à à à à à à à à à à Some of the recommendations that have been made include: ââ¬â Educating the patients and their families. Lowering the pre-hospital time. Further research in studying the role of other associated factors. Summary and Conclusions In what way(s) are the conclusions of the study appropriate? à à à à à à à à à à à The study goes on to show the present state of affairs in African-Americans.à As the pre-hospital delay was significantly longer than one hour, they are not going to benefit much from reperfusion therapy (the benefits of such therapy is best when administered within an hour after the onset of symptoms and signs of acute myocardial infarction). Besides, the study has also suggested that only through adequate education and counseling of the patients and their families, could the outcome be improved (to enable shorter pre-hospital delays).à The study has not only shown, the various factors that play an important role in prolonging the pre-hospital delay, but has also suggested that such delays should be decreased in order to improve the benefits, prognosis and survival rates. Do the benefits of the study outweigh the risks? à à à à à à à à à à à Yes, the benefits of the study definitely outweigh the risks.à Many studies conducted in the past have shown that African-Americans take longer time than Whites to seek medical help for the symptoms of acute myocardial infarction.à However, it is the first study that has demonstrated the various factors associated with prolonged pre-hospital delay in African-Americans. Presentation and Stylistic Aspects Title Does the title of the article accurately describe the study? In what way does it or does it not? à à à à à à à à à à à The title describes the study.à It demonstrates the various factors responsible for the prolonging the pre-hospital delay in African-American with the symptoms of acute myocardial infarction.à However, such factors may not be specific only to the African-American Community.à They could even exist in other communities.à Further studies are required to assess the role of similar factors on other communities and the role of other factors on the African-American community. Is the language used in the title understandable and informative? à à à à à à à à à à à Yes, the language used in the title is simple, understandable and informative. Complicated words are seldom being used. Is the title clear and concise? à à à à à à à à à à à Yes, the title is clear and concise.à It gives us an idea briefly of the problems and the factors the study is going to assess. This can means also taking into account taxes and regulation created by government. Macroeconomic focused on the supply and demand and other forces that determine the price level seen in he economy. For example microeconomics would look at how a specific company could maximize its production and capacity so it could lower price and better compete in its industry Macroeconomic on the other hand is it the field of economic that studies the behavior of the economy as a whole and not Just on the specific companies but the entire industries and economic .This look at economy-wide phenomena such as Gross Nation Product (GDP) and how its affected by changes in unemployment, nation income, rate growth, and price level . For example , macroeconomic would look t how an increase/decrease in net export would affect the nation capital account or how GDP would be affected by unemployment. What are the determinants of economic growth and living standard in a country in macroeconomic are used in determine to know why this country is more develop than other country are used macroeconomic. Why does inflation rate differ from time to time 3. why does inflation rate fro one country to anotherThe macroeconomic does not look for the one per son or individual s a policy but can be used to all people For instances if a national saving is increased at the cost of individual welfare it is not considered a wise policy The macroeconomic analysis regard aggregate as homogenous but does not into its internal composition For instance if the wages of the clerks fall and the wages of the teachers rise the average wage may remain the same It is not necessary that aggregate variable are important. For instance nation income is the total of the individual income if the nation income in the country goes up it is no necessary that the income of all individual in the country will also rise there is possibility that that the rise in nation income may be due to the increase in the income of a few rich families of the country
